Listen to this article

And if it be meet that I goe also, they shall goe with me. 1 Corinthians 16:4 (KJV)

Let all your things be done with charity.

Context: This verse is found in the context of Paul’s closing remarks in his first letter to the Corinthians.

Throughout the letter, Paul addresses various issues and concerns within the Corinthian church, including divisions, immorality, lawsuits, and abuses during the Lord’s Supper.

In the final chapter, he provides practical instructions and encouragement to the believers in Corinth.

In 1 Corinthians 16:14, Paul emphasises the importance of love or charity in all aspects of the believers’ lives.

The word “charity” used in this verse is translated from the Greek word “agape,” which refers to a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional love.

It is the same kind of love that God demonstrates towards humanity.

Love as the guiding principle: Paul encourages the Corinthian believers to let love be the guiding principle behind everything they do.

Love should permeate their actions, attitudes, and decisions.

It should govern their relationships with one another and their interactions with the world.

Love is the foundation upon which all other aspects of Christian living should be built.

Love in Christian service: The phrase “all your things” implies that every aspect of the believers’ lives should be marked by love.

This includes their service to others, their ministry, and their stewardship of resources.

Love should be the motivating force behind their actions and the manner in which they carry out their responsibilities.

Love as a distinguishing mark: Paul’s instruction to let all things be done with charity serves as a reminder to the Corinthians that their conduct should stand out among the people around them.

Their love for one another and their love for others should be a testimony to the transforming power of the gospel.

Love should distinguish them as followers of Christ and reflect God’s love to the world.

Love as the fulfilment of the law: Paul echoes the teachings of Jesus who emphasised the primacy of love.

In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus summarizes the entire law and prophets by commanding us to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbours as ourselves.

When Paul instructs the Corinthians to do all things with charity, he is reinforcing the centrality of love in fulfilling God’s commandments.

Overall, 1 Corinthians 16:14 reminds us of the vital role that love plays in the life of a believer.

Love should govern our actions, attitudes, and relationships.

It should permeate every aspect of our lives and serve as a distinguishing mark of our faith.

By embracing and practising love, we can fulfil God’s commandments and reflect the character of Christ to the world.
