1 Corinthians 2:12
Now wee haue receiued, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that wee might know the things that are freely giuen to vs of God. 1 Corinthians 2:12 (KJV)
In this passage Paul writes to the Corinthian believers to stress the necessity of spiritual wisdom and discernment. He draws a clear contrast between two opposing influences: the spirit of the world and the spirit of God. The spirit of the world represents the prevailing worldly wisdom and values that stand in opposition to God’s truth, while the spirit of God refers to the Holy Spirit, the divine presence that God gives to dwell within every believer who has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
By receiving the Holy Spirit, the Corinthians – and all believers – are granted the ability to understand and discern the things that God freely gives. These “things” include the spiritual blessings and truths God bestows: salvation, forgiveness, eternal life, spiritual gifts, divine guidance, and the deeper realities of God’s kingdom. The indwelling Spirit provides insight and revelation, enabling believers to grasp the profound truths that human wisdom cannot reveal.
Paul’s purpose in highlighting this truth is to encourage believers to rely on the Spirit for spiritual discernment. The world’s wisdom can easily lead believers astray, but a life filled with the Holy Spirit equips them to recognize God’s truth, to differentiate between worldly counsel and divine direction, and to make choices that align with God’s will.
Practically, the verse calls Christians to cultivate a close relationship with the Holy Spirit. This is achieved through consistent prayer, diligent study of Scripture, and a continual seeking of the Spirit’s guidance in every aspect of life. By doing so, believers grow in the ability to discern God’s wisdom, to appreciate the spiritual blessings He graciously provides, and to live transformed lives that reflect the Spirit’s power and presence.
