1 Corinthians 2:13

Listen to this article

“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it is important to understand the context in which it was written. The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to address various issues and conflicts within the Corinthian church. In the second chapter, Paul emphasizes the importance of relying on the wisdom of God, rather than worldly wisdom, in matters of faith and understanding.

Verse:1 Corinthians 2:13 (KJV) says, “Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

The role of the Holy Spirit:In this verse, Paul contrasts two sources of wisdom: man’s wisdom and the wisdom taught by the Holy Spirit. Paul asserts that the message he and his fellow apostles proclaim is not based on human wisdom or intellectual prowess but is directly inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, who is part of the triune nature of God, plays a vital role in revealing spiritual truths and guiding believers in their understanding of God’s Word.

Spiritual discernment:Paul’s emphasis on comparing “spiritual things with spiritual” suggests the need for spiritual discernment. The truths of God’s Word and the wisdom taught by the Holy Spirit can only be understood and discerned by those who have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. It implies that spiritual truths are not grasped through human intellect alone but require a spiritual connection with God.

The sufficiency of God’s wisdom:Paul’s intent in highlighting the contrast between human wisdom and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit is to emphasize the sufficiency and superiority of God’s wisdom. Human wisdom, no matter how eloquent or educated, falls short when it comes to comprehending the deep spiritual truths of God. The wisdom imparted by the Holy Spirit, on the other hand, enables believers to understand and apply the spiritual principles found in Scripture.

Application:As believers, we are called to rely on the Holy Spirit for understanding and wisdom in our Christian walk. This requires a humble posture of dependence on God, acknowledging that our own wisdom is limited. We should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit when studying the Bible, praying for illumination and insight into its truths. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of spiritual matters and discern God’s will for our lives.

  • In conclusion:1 Corinthians 2:13 highlights the importance of relying on the wisdom taught by the Holy Spirit rather than human wisdom. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of spiritual matters and apply God’s truths in our lives.
