1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)
Context
Paul wrote this letter to address divisions and disorders within the Corinthian church. In this chapter, he contrasts the wisdom of God with the wisdom of the world, explaining that God’s wisdom is revealed by the Spirit and is therefore inaccessible to human reasoning alone.
Meaning
The “natural man” is a person who has not been spiritually reborn and is not guided by the Holy Spirit. This individual operates by natural instincts, human wisdom, and worldly values. The term does not describe a newborn believer, who, though lacking knowledge, has a taste for spiritual things.
The natural man does not receive or welcome the things of the Spirit of God. These include the teachings of Scripture, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the deep truths of God’s wisdom. Because these truths do not align with his worldly perspective, they seem like foolishness or nonsense to him.
The verse further states that the natural man “cannot know” these things. This is not a temporary inability but a fundamental incapacity. The reason is that spiritual truths are “spiritually discerned“—they require a spiritual capacity to evaluate and judge them rightly. Unaided human reason cannot apprehend what only the Spirit can illuminate.
Spiritual discernment is the ability to understand and perceive spiritual truths through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is a gift given to those who have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit illuminates the truths of God’s Word and empowers believers to comprehend and embrace spiritual realities. Without the Spirit dwelling within, these truths remain beyond comprehension.
Application
Seek the Holy Spirit: To understand and receive the things of the Spirit, we must actively seek a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide and illuminate our understanding of God’s Word.
Recognize worldly wisdom: The verse highlights the limitations of worldly wisdom. As Christians, we should be cautious not to rely solely on human understanding but rather seek God’s wisdom in all things, since worldly wisdom may not align with God’s truth.
Pray for spiritual discernment: We should regularly pray for the Holy Spirit to grant us spiritual discernment, enabling us to understand and apply the deep truths of God’s Word to our lives and to navigate life’s challenges wisely.
This verse explains why the gospel can seem foolish to those who do not have the Spirit. It also implies that spiritual understanding is a gift and a work of the Spirit, not a matter of human intellect or eloquence. For believers, it underscores the need to rely on the Spirit for understanding and to pray for the Spirit’s illuminating work.
