1 Corinthians 3:17
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
1 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)
Context
This verse concludes Paul’s warning about divisions and strife within the church at Corinth. The Corinthians were dividing into factions, and Paul reminds them that their conduct toward one another has serious spiritual consequences.
Meaning
The “temple of God” here is not a physical building but the corporate body of believers, the church. The Greek word translated “defile” (phtheiro) also means “destroy” or “corrupt.” Paul warns that anyone who corrupts the church through false doctrine, worldly wisdom, or by causing factions and divisions brings divine judgment upon himself. The phrase “him shall God destroy” is a strong statement of God’s judgment, affecting body and soul. This destruction does not necessarily mean immediate physical death or annihilation; it refers to divine discipline or judgment that God will bring upon those who harm His dwelling place.
The verse concludes by reiterating the holiness of the temple: “the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” The church is set apart for God’s purposes, and God Himself guards its sanctity. Because believers are holy, they are called to honor and respect the holiness of their bodies and their corporate life, guarding against moral, ethical, and spiritual corruption.
Biblical connections
This teaching connects with 1 Corinthians 6:19, where Paul reminds believers that their bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, reinforcing the truth that God dwells among His people.
Application
As followers of Christ, we are called to live in a manner that reflects God’s righteousness, both individually and as a church. We must avoid corrupting influences and strive to maintain unity and purity, knowing that God takes the holiness of His temple seriously.
Reflection
Consider how your words and actions affect the unity and holiness of the church. Are you building up the temple of God or defiling it? Let this verse lead you to repentance and a renewed commitment to honor God’s dwelling place.
