1 John 2:15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1 John 2:15 (KJV)
Context
John writes to believers facing false teaching and the pull of a world that opposes God. In this verse, he gives a direct command: do not love the world or the things in it. The word “world” here does not mean the physical earth or the people God loves. It refers to the fallen, sinful system that stands against God’s values and principles—the desires, pursuits, and attitudes that are contrary to His will.
Meaning
“Love not the world” is a command, not a suggestion. It warns against developing an affectionate attachment or devotion to this sinful system. “Neither the things that are in the world” extends the warning to everything the world offers: material possessions, worldly ambitions, sinful pleasures, and anything that could distract a believer from wholehearted devotion to God.
The second half of the verse gives a severe test: “If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” This is not about occasional lapses or struggling with temptation. It describes a characteristic, ruling love—when someone’s affections are primarily set on the world and its values, that reveals a lack of genuine love for the Father. True love for God and love for the world are mutually exclusive.
Biblical connections
The following verses in 1 John 2:16-17 explain why this command matters: the world’s desires—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—do not come from the Father, and the world itself is passing away. Only those who do God’s will live forever. James 4:4 makes the same point: friendship with the world is enmity with God. Romans 12:2 calls believers to be transformed by renewing their minds, so they no longer conform to the world’s pattern.
Application
This verse calls us to examine our affections. It is not wrong to enjoy God’s creation or to have possessions, but we must guard against letting worldly desires take first place in our hearts. The world’s attractions are temporary and do not bring lasting fulfillment; loving them leads to spiritual emptiness and distance from God. As followers of Christ, we are to align our desires and choices with God’s will, consciously resisting the enticements of the world.
Reflection
Where is your love directed today? If your heart is divided, this verse is a loving warning to turn back. God calls us to love Him above all else, and in doing so, we find true contentment and a deeper relationship with our Heavenly Father.
