1 John 3:1

Listen to this article

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”

Context:The book of 1 John was written by the apostle John, who was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. It was written to encourage and strengthen the early Christian community in their faith and to address various issues they were facing, including false teachings and moral challenges.

“Behold”:The word “behold” is used to draw attention and emphasize something important. In this case, it directs the reader to pay close attention to the remarkable love that God has shown to believers.

God’s Love:The verse begins by highlighting the extraordinary love that the Father (God) has bestowed upon us. This love is not ordinary or common, but rather something extraordinary and remarkable. It is a love that goes beyond human comprehension and expectation.

Sons of God:The verse continues by stating that because of this great love, believers are called the “sons of God.” This phrase is not gender-specific and applies to both men and women who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. It signifies a special relationship with God as His children and implies the privileges and benefits that come with being part of His family.

The World’s Lack of Recognition:The verse concludes by stating that the world does not know or understand believers because it did not know or recognize Jesus. This refers to the fact that those who do not have a personal relationship with God through Christ cannot fully comprehend the love, identity, and purpose of believers. The world’s values, priorities, and perspectives are often contrary to the ways of God.
