“In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.”

Context:The First Epistle of John was written by the apostle John, and it contains instructions and teachings to encourage believers in their faith and to address some of the challenges they were facing. The specific verse, 1 John 3:10, falls within a larger section discussing the nature of love and the distinction between the children of God and the children of the devil.

The Manifestation of God’s Children:The verse begins by stating that “the children of God are manifest.” The word “manifest” means to reveal or make evident. In this context, it refers to the visible and discernible characteristics of those who belong to God. As followers of Christ, our lives should reflect the nature and values of our Heavenly Father. Our actions, attitudes, and relationships should demonstrate the transformational work of the Holy Spirit within us.

Children of God vs. Children of the Devil:The verse contrasts the children of God with the children of the devil. This highlights the spiritual reality that there are two distinct camps: those who belong to God and those who are under the influence of the devil. This distinction is not based on human lineage but on one’s spiritual nature and relationship with God.

The Practice of Righteousness:The verse continues by stating, “whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God.” Here, John emphasizes the importance of righteous living. Those who truly belong to God will exhibit a lifestyle marked by righteousness, which involves living in accordance with God’s commands and moral standards. Righteousness is not merely external actions but also an inward attitude and heart transformation that seeks to honor and obey God.

Love for One’s Brother:The verse concludes with the statement, “neither he that loveth not his brother.” John adds another essential characteristic of God’s children: love for one another. Genuine love for fellow believers is a clear indication of belonging to God. Jesus taught that loving one another is one of the distinguishing marks of His followers (John 13:35). This love should be selfless, sacrificial, and demonstrated through actions that build up and edify the body of Christ.
