1 John 3:11
“For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.”
Historical Context:The book of 1 John was written by the Apostle John, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. It is believed to have been written around AD 90-95. The letter of 1 John was addressed to a group of Christians who were facing false teachings and challenges to their faith.
- Understanding the Verse:
In this verse, John reminds the readers of the message they heard from the beginning. This message is centred on the importance of love. John emphasises that the foundational teaching they received from Jesus Christ and the early apostles was about loving one another.
The Message of Love:The concept of love is central to the Christian faith. Jesus himself emphasised the commandment to love one another in his teachings. In John 13:34-35, Jesus said, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another.”
The command to love one another goes beyond mere affection or emotion. It is a selfless, sacrificial love that seeks the well-being and welfare of others. This love is not limited to those within the Christian community but extends to all people.
Love as the Mark of Discipleship:John highlights that love is not only an essential teaching but also a distinguishing characteristic of true disciples of Jesus. By displaying genuine love for one another, Christians demonstrate their identity as followers of Christ. Love is a powerful witness to the world, and it sets Christians apart as representatives of God’s love on earth.
Application:
As believers, the verse challenges us to examine our lives and ask ourselves if we are living out the message of love that we have received. Are we actively loving one another, both within the Christian community and beyond? Our love for others should be evident in our actions, words, and attitudes.
This verse also calls us to reflect on how our love for others reflects God’s love for us. We are called to imitate Christ’s selfless love and extend it to those around us.
