Listen to this article

“And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.”

Context:Before we delve into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context of the book of 1 John. This letter was written by the Apostle John, likely in the late first century, to a community of believers facing various challenges, including false teachings and moral struggles. John wrote to encourage and strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ.

Passage:Let’s read 1 John 3:24 (KJV) together: “And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.”

The Importance of Obedience:This verse emphasises the significance of obedience to God’s commandments. John says that those who keep God’s commandments “dwell in Him.” This implies a close, intimate relationship with God. Obedience is not merely a matter of following rules but rather a reflection of our love for God and our desire to align our lives with His will.

Mutual Indwelling:The verse continues, stating that God also dwells in those who keep His commandments. This mutual indwelling points to the intimate relationship between God and His followers. When we walk in obedience, the Holy Spirit takes up residence within us, enabling us to experience a deep connection with God.

Assurance through the Spirit:John further explains that we can know that God abides in us by the Spirit whom He has given us. The Holy Spirit serves as a witness to our relationship with God. Through the presence and work of the Spirit in our lives, we can have assurance of our salvation and confidence in our relationship with God.

Implications for Believers:This verse underscores the importance of a transformed life marked by obedience to God’s commandments. It reminds us that our relationship with God is not a distant or superficial one, but one characterised by intimacy and mutual indwelling. As believers, we should strive to keep God’s commandments, knowing that through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we can experience a close communion with Him.

Remember, this Bible study provides an overview of 1 John 3:24, but there is much more to discover and explore in this rich book.
