1 John 4:1

Beloued, beleeue not euery spirit, but trie the spirits, whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1 (KJV)

Context: This passage reminds us that the Holy Spirit is essential for understanding the truth about God and the world. The Holy Spirit is also a witness and helper, showing us how to follow God’s truth (John 16:13).

Key Themes:

Spirit of Truth – The Holy Spirit is “the Spirit of truth,” who “will guide us into all truth” (John 16:13).

Witness – The Holy Spirit is a witness to Christ and to our lives as believers (John 15:26; John 16:13).

Divine presence – The Holy Spirit’s presence in the Church is essential for the Christian’s relationship with God (Ephesians 2:18).

Truth – The Holy Spirit brings the truth that “helps us to know the truth, which sets us free” (John 8:32).

Study Questions:

Why does John urge believers not to believe every spirit?

What does it mean to “try the spirits”? How can we test whether something is of God or not?

Why does John emphasise the presence of false prophets in the world? What dangers do they pose to believers?

How can we cultivate discernment in our own lives? What resources or practices can help us in testing the spirits?

What are some practical steps we can take to guard ourselves against false teachings and the influence of false prophets?

Application:

Develop a habit of studying and meditating on God’s Word regularly. The more familiar we become with the truth, the better equipped we will be to recognise falsehood. Seek wisdom through prayer. Ask God to grant you discernment and to guide you in distinguishing between truth and deception. Compare teachings with Scripture. Always measure the words of others against the unchanging truth of God’s Word. If a teaching contradicts the Bible, it should be rejected. Surround yourself with a community of believers who share your commitment to biblical truth. Engage in meaningful discussions about faith and hold one another accountable in discerning truth. Cultivate a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The closer we draw to Him, the more sensitive we become to the leading of His Spirit and the better we can discern His voice. Remember, John’s exhortation to “try the spirits” is a timeless reminder to remain vigilant and discerning in our faith. By relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit and grounding ourselves in God’s Word, we can navigate the challenges of false teachings and grow in our understanding of the truth.
