1 John 4:17

“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s helpful to consider the surrounding verses and the overall theme of the passage. In 1 John 4:17, the apostle John is addressing the concept of love and its connection to our relationship with God. He emphasizes the perfect love of God, which empowers believers to have confidence and boldness in the day of judgment.

Love made perfect:The verse begins with the phrase, “Herein is our love made perfect.” John is referring to the fact that our love is perfected or brought to completion through the love of God. As believers, we are called to love one another as God has loved us (1 John 4:11). When we experience and embrace God’s love, it transforms us and enables us to love others more fully.

Boldness in the day of judgment:John goes on to explain that the result of our love being made perfect is that we may have boldness in the day of judgment. The day of judgment refers to the future time when all people will stand before God for final judgment. Believers can have confidence and boldness on that day because their sins are forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ, and they are covered by His righteousness. Through the love of God, believers can approach the day of judgment with assurance and trust in His grace.

As He is, so are we:The verse concludes by stating, “because as he is, so are we in this world.” This phrase highlights an important aspect of the believer’s identity. It points to the reality that, as followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His character and nature in this world. Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are transformed to become more like Jesus. We are called to exhibit His love, compassion, forgiveness, and righteousness in our daily lives.
