1 John 4:18

Listen to this article

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the first epistle of John that emphasizes the importance of love and the relationship between love and fear. Let’s break it down and explore its meaning.

“There is no fear in love”: Love and fear are presented as contrasting emotions. When we truly experience the love of God and abide in His love, fear is driven away. Fear and love cannot coexist in the same space.

“But perfect love casteth out fear”: The perfect love of God has the power to drive away fear from our hearts and minds. God’s love is complete, unconditional, and unfailing. When we fully grasp the depth of His love for us, it dispels all fear and anxiety.

“Because fear hath torment”: Fear can be tormenting. It brings anxiety, worry, and distress, hindering our ability to experience the peace and joy that God intends for us. Fear can paralyze us and prevent us from living a life of faith and trust in God.

“He that feareth is not made perfect in love”: If fear still dominates our lives, it indicates that we have not fully embraced or understood the perfect love that God offers us. The presence of fear reveals a lack of trust in God’s character and His promises. As we grow in our understanding and experience of God’s love, fear diminishes.

This verse encourages us to seek and abide in the perfect love of God, which eradicates fear from our lives. It reminds us that as we draw closer to God and deepen our relationship with Him, His love transforms us and helps us overcome fear. By trusting in His love, we can find freedom from the torment of fear and experience the abundant life that He has promised.

Overall, 1 John 4:18 calls us to focus on God’s perfect love, allowing it to dispel our fears and anxieties. It invites us to grow in our understanding of His love and to cultivate a relationship with Him that is grounded in trust and faith.
