1 John 5:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:34
Listen to this article

“This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.”

Context:To understand the meaning of this verse, it’s helpful to consider the context of the passage. The apostle John wrote the First Epistle of John to address various issues within the early Christian community. One of the main themes throughout the epistle is the assurance of eternal life and the importance of genuine faith in Jesus Christ.

In 1 John 5:6, John presents a statement about Jesus Christ and emphasizes the truth of His identity and mission. Let’s break down the verse into key components:

“This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ”:This phrase refers to Jesus’ earthly ministry and His sacrificial death. The reference to “water and blood” can be understood in several ways:

  • Water: Some scholars suggest that “water” here symbolizes Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist, which marked the beginning of His public ministry. It could also represent Jesus’ role as the source of spiritual cleansing or the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (John 7:37-39).
  • Blood: “Blood” refers to Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, shedding His blood as an atonement for the sins of humanity. It highlights the central aspect of Jesus’ mission to offer salvation through His sacrifice.

Together, “water and blood” encapsulate the totality of Jesus’ ministry, from His baptism to His crucifixion.

“Not by water only, but by water and blood”:This phrase emphasizes that Jesus’ mission was not solely about baptism or purification. His purpose went beyond the water baptism He received and extended to the ultimate act of self‑sacrifice on the cross. The conjunction “but” indicates that both water and blood are necessary to fully comprehend the significance of Jesus’ work.

“And it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth”:Here, John highlights the role of the Holy Spirit in affirming the truth about Jesus. The Holy Spirit testifies to the reality and authenticity of Jesus’ identity and work. The Spirit’s witness confirms that Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah, and the Savior of the world.

Overall, 1 John 5:6 reinforces the truth of Jesus’ mission and affirms the essential role of both His baptism (represented by water) and His sacrificial death (represented by blood). It also underscores the testimony of the Holy Spirit, who bears witness to the truth about Jesus.

As believers, this verse reminds us of the importance of recognizing and affirming the full scope of Jesus’ ministry. It encourages us to rely on the Holy Spirit, who testifies to the truth of who Jesus is and what He has accomplished for our salvation.
