If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

Context

The first epistle of John is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, though many modern scholars consider the author to be an unknown member of the Johannine community. It was written to address the early Christian community and provide them with guidance and encouragement in their faith. In this particular verse, John discusses the importance of God’s witness regarding His Son, Jesus Christ.

Meaning

John begins by contrasting the witness of men with the witness of God. Human testimony is often considered reliable and valuable in legal matters and everyday life, yet John points out that the witness of God holds even greater significance and authority. As believers we are called to value and prioritise God’s testimony above all else.

The word “greater” indicates superiority in authority and weight. God’s testimony is not merely another witness alongside human witnesses; it surpasses them entirely. The second half of the verse identifies the content of God’s testimony: “this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.” The testimony of God is specifically about His Son, Jesus Christ. This is the central message of the epistle: God has borne witness to the identity and work of His Son.

Biblical connections

John emphasises that the witness of God is centred on His testimony about His Son, Jesus Christ. Throughout Scripture God provides numerous witnesses to affirm the identity and mission of Jesus. For example, at Jesus’ baptism the Father declared, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3:17). This divine testimony confirms who Jesus is and carries unquestionable authority.

The law of Moses itself admitted the witness of credible persons to establish matters (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15). John builds on this accepted practice to make a greater point: if we accept human testimony, then the testimony of God is greater.

Application

The witness of God concerning His Son confirms Jesus’ divine nature, His redemptive work on the cross, and His role as the Savior of the world. God’s testimony assures us that Jesus is the Messiah who fulfilled prophecy and brought salvation to humanity. By acknowledging and accepting God’s witness we place our faith in the truth of His Word and experience the blessings of salvation.

The verse encourages us to trust in God’s witness rather than rely solely on human testimony. In a world filled with varying opinions and beliefs, the unchanging truth of God’s Word gives us assurance and confidence.

Because God’s witness testifies about His Son, believers should strive to deepen their understanding of Jesus, His teachings, and His redemptive work. Such knowledge strengthens faith and equips us to share the good news with others.

Having received the witness of God, we are called to proclaim it. As ambassadors of Christ we have the privilege and responsibility to point others to the divine testimony about Jesus.
