1 Kings 1:11
Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath–sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
1 Kings 1:11 (KJV)
Context
This verse places us at a decisive moment in Israel’s history. King David is very old, and his reign is drawing to a close. Adonijah, one of David’s sons, has taken steps to make himself king without David’s knowledge or approval. Nathan the prophet learns of this and goes to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, to inform her and to seek her help in ensuring that Solomon, the rightful heir, becomes king.
Nathan’s question, “Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?” reveals that Adonijah’s actions were public and presumptuous, yet hidden from the king. Bathsheba had a special concern in this matter because it affected her son Solomon, to whom the succession of the kingdom had been designed and promised. The immediate context (1 Kings 1:12-14) shows Nathan giving Bathsheba counsel to save her life and Solomon’s, and instructing her to remind David of his oath that Solomon would reign after him.
Meaning
Nathan’s approach shows the importance of godly counsel and timely intervention. He did not remain silent but acted to protect the divine plan for the throne. The verse also highlights the role of the prophet as a faithful advisor who speaks truth to those in positions of responsibility. Nathan’s words carry urgency, for Adonijah’s claim threatened not only the throne but also the lives of Bathsheba and Solomon.
Adonijah’s rebellion was not merely a political maneuver; it was a direct challenge to God’s revealed will. David had promised Bathsheba that Solomon would succeed him, and Nathan knew that promise. The prophet’s question to Bathsheba was both a warning and a call to action. It reminds us that God’s purposes will not be thwarted by human schemes, and that faithful individuals are called to act wisely and courageously in the face of opposition.
Biblical connections
This event connects to the broader biblical theme of God’s sovereignty in establishing kings. In 2 Samuel 7:12-16, God promised David that his offspring would establish the kingdom forever. Solomon’s succession was part of that promise. Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne was therefore not just a family conflict but a struggle against God’s revealed plan.
Nathan’s role as a prophet who speaks truth to power echoes the ministry of other prophets who confronted kings with God’s word. His courage in approaching Bathsheba and later David (1 Kings 1:22-27) demonstrates that faithful service often requires boldness and wisdom.
Application
Trust in God’s Plan – Just as God had a plan for the succession of David’s throne, He also has a plan for our lives. Trusting in His sovereignty and His timing, even when things may seem uncertain, allows us to rest in His faithfulness and guidance.
Seek Wise Counsel – When faced with challenging decisions, it is important to seek counsel from wise and godly individuals who can offer guidance and perspective. Surrounding ourselves with such people can help us make informed choices aligned with God’s will.
Act in Obedience – As Nathan faithfully carried out God’s instructions, we should strive to be obedient to God’s calling in our own lives. Being attentive to His voice and acting in accordance with His will can lead us on the path of righteousness and blessings.
Reflection
Nathan’s question to Bathsheba still speaks to us today. When we see wrong actions that threaten God’s purposes, we are not to remain silent. We are called to speak truth with love and to act with courage. God often works through faithful people who are willing to step forward at the right moment.
Consider the urgency in Nathan’s words. He did not delay or wait for a more convenient time. He recognized the danger and moved quickly. In our own lives, there are moments when we must act promptly to protect what is right. May we have the same wisdom and courage to respond when God calls us to intervene.
