1 Kings 1:48

And also thus said the king, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.

1 Kings 1:48 (KJV)

King David was very old and near death. His son Adonijah tried to make himself king without David’s approval. Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, and the prophet Nathan told David what Adonijah had done. David then acted quickly to make Solomon king. This verse records David’s praise after Solomon was officially placed on the throne. The events were set in motion by human actions, yet David saw God’s hand in them.

David blesses the Lord God of Israel. He thanks God for giving one to sit on his throne that day. The words “mine eyes even seeing it” show David’s joy. He personally witnessed God’s promise come true. David knew that the succession was not just a human event. God had chosen Solomon and had kept His word. David ascribes the entire succession to God’s providence, even though human plans and conflicts surrounded it.

God had promised David that his descendant would rule after him (2 Samuel 7:12-16). In this verse, David sees that promise begin to happen. The throne passes to Solomon, and the Davidic line continues. This points ahead to Jesus Christ, the Son of David, whose kingdom will last forever. God’s faithfulness to David gives hope that He will also fulfill His greater promise through Christ. The everlasting kingdom promised to David finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus.

David’s praise teaches us to thank God for His blessings. Even when human plans and conflicts surround us, God is still in control. We can trust that His promises will stand. Like David, we should acknowledge God’s hand in our lives and surrender to His will. When we see God work, we can respond with gratitude and worship. This verse encourages believers to trust in God’s sovereign plan and to bless Him for His faithfulness.

David did not take credit for the kingdom. He gave glory to God. His example calls us to humility. We recognize that every good gift comes from the Lord. As we face uncertain times, we remember that God remains faithful. We can bless Him today, knowing that He who promised will also fulfill it. David’s blessing is a model of humble acknowledgment that all authority and succession come from God.
