The throne had sixe steps, and the top of the throne was round behind: and there were stayes on either side on the place of the seate, and two lyons stood beside the stayes. 1 Kings 10:19 (KJV)

1 Kings 10:19 provides a vivid description of King Solomon’s throne, emphasizing its elaborate design and the symbolism embedded in its features. The verse notes that the throne had six steps, a detail that underscores its elevated status and the honor accorded to the king who would ascend them. At the summit, the top of the throne is described as “round behind,” suggesting a curved or circular backrest that contributed to an impressive and regal appearance.

Flanking the seat were “stays,” a term that denotes supports or armrests. These stays would have offered both stability and comfort to the monarch, enhancing the throne’s splendor and functional elegance. Beside each stay stood a lion, and the presence of two lions is striking. In the ancient Near East, lions were powerful symbols of strength, authority, and royalty; their placement beside the throne visually reinforced Solomon’s sovereignty and the might of his kingdom.

The passage is situated within the narrative of the Queen of Sheba’s visit, a chapter that highlights Solomon’s wisdom, wealth, and the prosperity of his reign. The detailed description of the throne therefore serves as a tangible illustration of the opulence that surrounded the king’s court. While the verse focuses on physical attributes, it also invites readers to consider the broader spiritual and moral dimensions of Scripture. Understanding the historical and cultural background enriches appreciation of the text, yet the ultimate aim of biblical study remains to discern timeless truths that speak to faith, leadership, and the character of God’s people. These insights aim to guide future generations in faithful living.
