1 Kings 11:2
Of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.
1 Kings 11:2 (KJV)
Context
1 Kings 11 records a turning point in the reign of King Solomon, son of David. Solomon was known for his wisdom and the splendor of his kingdom, yet this chapter shows his heart drifting from the Lord. The verse names the nations about which God had warned Israel. In the Law, God commanded the Israelites not to intermarry with the surrounding pagan peoples (Deuteronomy 7:1-3). That command was meant to protect Israel from being drawn into the worship of other gods.
Meaning
The warning is direct: these nations would “surely turn away your heart after their gods.” The danger was not ethnic but spiritual. Marrying people who served other deities threatened Israel’s exclusive devotion to the Lord. The Hebrew word for “clave” suggests a strong, clinging bond. The phrase “in love” shows that Solomon’s attachment was not casual but a deliberate, affectionate commitment. He held fast to these women despite knowing God’s command. This was not a momentary lapse but a persistent choice.
Biblical connections
Solomon’s actions fulfilled the warning. His foreign wives turned his heart after other gods, leading him to build altars for their deities. This disobedience brought idolatry into Israel and eventually caused the kingdom to divide. The New Testament echoes this principle in 2 Corinthians 6:14, urging believers not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. The connection is clear: close relationships can shape a person’s devotion, for good or for harm. God’s prohibitions are not arbitrary; they guard the covenant relationship.
Application
God’s commands are given for our protection and spiritual well-being. Solomon’s example warns that even the wisest person can be led astray when he ignores clear instruction. Believers today should examine their closest attachments. A relationship that pulls the heart away from God, whether through marriage, friendship, or business, invites spiritual drift. Obedience safeguards the covenant relationship with the Lord. We must also consider the influence of our own choices on others.
Reflection
This verse calls for honest self-examination. What holds our hearts “in love“? Are there attachments that compete with our love for God? The warning remains relevant: compromising devotion to God leads to division and loss. Yet the passage also shows God’s faithfulness in speaking clearly beforehand. He warns because He cares. Choosing obedience, even when it costs, preserves the joy of walking closely with Him.
