1 Kings 12:16

“So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.”

Historical Context

At this point in Israel’s history Solomon had died and his son Rehoboam had become king. The people of Israel came to Rehoboam requesting relief from the heavy yoke and burdensome labour that his father had imposed upon them. They desired a lighter load and greater consideration from their new king.

Rejection of the King’s Authority

In response to the request Rehoboam sought counsel from his father’s advisors and also consulted the young men who had grown up with him. He chose to follow the advice of his peers, who urged him to respond with even greater harshness and an increased burden upon the people. When the Israelites saw that Rehoboam was not willing to listen to their plea, they rejected his authority.

Disassociation from the House of David

The people’s response in 1 Kings 12:16 reflects their frustration and disillusionment with the line of David. They question their portion in David and their inheritance in the son of Jesse, expressing disappointment with Rehoboam’s lack of concern for their welfare and his failure to continue the wise and just rule of David.
