1 Kings 12:23

Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

Context

This verse appears in the account of the kingdom’s division after Solomon’s death. Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, ruled over Judah, while Jeroboam ruled the northern tribes. When the people asked Rehoboam for relief from heavy burdens, his harsh reply provoked the northern tribes to break away. Rehoboam then gathered 180,000 warriors from Judah and Benjamin to fight against Israel, but God sent the prophet Shemaiah with a message for Rehoboam and the people.

God’s message names Rehoboam as “king of Judah,” a title the Lord Himself acknowledges, and it addresses “all the house of Judah and Benjamin” together with “the remnant of the people.” The house of Judah and Benjamin formed the southern kingdom, while the remnant refers to those from other tribes who remained loyal to Rehoboam rather than following Jeroboam. The verse sets the stage for the divine command in the next verse: the people must not fight against their brothers, for this division is from the Lord.
