1 Kings 13:11

Listen to this article

Now there dwelt an old Prophet in Bethel, and his sonne came and told him all the workes that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which hee had spoken vnto the king, them they tolde also to their father. 1 Kings 13:11 (KJV)

The chapter tells the story of an unnamed prophet from Judah who was sent by God to deliver a message to King Jeroboam of the northern kingdom of Israel. In verse 1 the prophet goes to Bethel, where King Jeroboam was offering sacrifices to idols, and boldly declares God’s judgment against the altar, even prophesying that a future king named Josiah would desecrate it and burn the bones of false priests (1 Kings 13:2). After delivering this message, the prophet refuses the king’s invitation to eat with him, stating that God had commanded him not to eat or drink in that place and to return home by a different route (1 Kings 13:7‑10).

In verse 11 an older prophet hears of the man of God’s actions, approaches the younger prophet, and claims that a word of the LORD has instructed him to bring the man of God back to his house for a meal. Trusting this new instruction, the younger prophet returns and eats with the older man, despite the earlier command not to eat or drink in that place. While they were eating together, the word of the LORD came to both prophets, condemning them for disobeying His command. The younger prophet is told that because he disobeyed God and ate and drank in the place, his body would not be buried in the tomb of his fathers (1 Kings 13:21‑22).

This story serves as a warning about the importance of remaining faithful to God’s instructions and not being deceived, even by those who claim to be messengers of God. It teaches the significance of following God’s instructions without compromise and staying true to His word, even in the face of opposition or deception. It reminds us to be discerning and to test everything against the truth of God’s revealed word.

In conclusion, 1 Kings 13:11 reminds us of the importance of faithfulness and obedience to God’s commands. It is a cautionary tale about the dangers of being swayed by false teachings and deceptive individuals. May we remain steadfast in our devotion to God, always seeking His guidance and staying true to His word.
