Then hee said vnto him, Come home with me, and eate bread. 1 Kings 13:15 (KJV)

1 Kings 13 is a chapter that tells the story of a prophet from Judah who was sent by God to deliver a message to King Jeroboam of Israel. And a prophet, who was a good man, and was in the house of the LORD, went out, and prophesied against the altar which Jeroboam had made at Bethel. The prophet was given specific instructions not to eat or drink anything in the land and to return by a different route. “Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.” – This verse records the invitation of an older prophet to the prophet from Judah. The older prophet urged the younger one to come home and eat bread.

The Temptation: The invitation from the older prophet posed a challenge to the prophet from Judah because it contradicted the instructions given to him by God. The younger prophet had been commanded not to eat or drink anything while in the land, but the older prophet suggested otherwise.

The Test of Obedience: This verse highlights the test of obedience faced by the prophet from Judah. He had to make a decision whether to follow God’s direct instructions or listen to the words of the older prophet. The verse does not explicitly state the outcome of the decision made by the prophet from Judah.

Obedience to God’s Word: The story emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s instructions, even when faced with temptation or conflicting advice. The prophet from Judah was specifically commanded by God not to eat or drink, and he was tested in his obedience to this instruction.

Discernment: The prophet from Judah had to discern whether the words of the older prophet aligned with the commandment he received from God. This incident reminds us of the need to discern the voices we listen to and to compare them with the teachings of Scripture.

Consequences of Disobedience: While the verse doesn’t reveal the prophet’s response, subsequent verses in the chapter reveal that the prophet from Judah eventually disobeyed God’s command and suffered consequences for his actions. This serves as a reminder that there are consequences for disregarding God’s instructions.

Faithful Obedience: The story calls us to be faithful in obeying God’s Word, even when faced with challenges or temptations. It requires a deep trust in God’s wisdom and guidance, knowing that His commands are for our good.

Discerning God’s Voice: We should develop a discerning spirit by immersing ourselves in the study of God’s Word. This will help us recognize and differentiate between true and false teachings or conflicting advice.

Consequences of Disobedience: The story reminds us that disobedience to God’s commands can lead to negative consequences. It highlights the importance of learning from our mistakes.

Remember, the specific details and teachings of this story extend beyond a single verse. Therefore, it’s valuable to read the entire chapter to grasp the full context and gain a deeper understanding of the lessons conveyed in 1 Kings 13.
