1 Kings 13:29

And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

Context

This verse closes a tragic story. A man of God from Judah had been sent by the Lord to prophesy against the false altar that King Jeroboam had built at Bethel (1 Kings 13:1-10). God gave him strict orders: he was not to eat or drink in that place, and he was to return by a different road. But an old prophet from Bethel lied to him, saying that an angel had told him to bring the man of God home for a meal. The man of God believed the lie and disobeyed God. On his way back, a lion killed him (1 Kings 13:20-24).

Meaning

In this verse, the old prophet who had deceived the man of God now takes up his body. He lays the corpse on a donkey, brings it back to the city, and mourns over him and buries him. This act shows respect for the man of God even though he had sinned. The old prophet did not abandon the body to shame. He gave it an honorable burial. This is a final gesture of honor toward a true prophet, and it prepares for the old prophet’s later request to be buried in the same tomb (1 Kings 13:31).

Biblical connections

The burial also confirms that the man of God’s prophecy was true. The old prophet later said, “When I die, bury me in the grave wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones” (1 Kings 13:31). He believed that the words the man of God had spoken against the altar at Bethel would surely come to pass. This connection shows that even in death, the man of God’s message stood firm.

Application

This verse teaches that obedience to God must be absolute, even when a trusted person gives contrary advice. The man of God died because he listened to a lie instead of holding to God’s clear command. Believers today must test every counsel against Scripture and seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Deception can come from unexpected places, so spiritual discernment is essential.

The old prophet’s mourning also reminds us that God’s judgment is certain, but there is still room for mercy and honor. Even when someone fails, we can treat them with dignity. We should not rejoice in another’s downfall, but rather show compassion and respect.

Consider your own walk with God. Are there areas where you are tempted to compromise what He has clearly said? Do you weigh the advice of others against the truth of Scripture? This sobering account calls us to examine our hearts and to trust wholly in God’s guidance. Deviation from His word brings serious consequences, but faithful obedience leads to life.
