1 Kings 15:24
And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead.
1 Kings 15:24 (KJV)
Context
The book of 1 Kings records the reigns of the kings of Israel and Judah. This verse concludes the account of King Asa of Judah, marking his death, burial, and the succession of his son Jehoshaphat.
Meaning
Asa was the son of Abijam and grandson of Rehoboam, and he reigned over Judah for forty-one years, from about 911 to 870 BC. He is described in 1 Kings 15:11 as a king who did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, unlike many of his predecessors. He removed idolatry from the land, even deposing his own mother from her position as queen because she had made an idol, and he fortified cities in Judah.
The phrase “slept with his fathers” is a common biblical expression for death, indicating that Asa died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David, the burial place of the Davidic kings. The same expression is used for other kings, such as Abijam (1 Kings 15:8) and Jehoshaphat (1 Kings 22:50), showing it as a standard formula for royal deaths in the books of Kings. The Chronicler adds that Asa was buried in a sepulchre he had made for himself, laid on a bed filled with sweet odours and spices, which were burned for him (2 Chronicles 16:14), highlighting the honor given to him at death.
After Asa’s death, his son Jehoshaphat reigned in his stead. Jehoshaphat continued his father’s legacy by following the Lord and seeking spiritual reforms. This succession also continues the Davidic line, which is significant for the biblical narrative, as both Asa and Jehoshaphat are part of the lineage leading to Christ.
Biblical connections
The verse is part of the larger narrative of the divided kingdom, focusing on the southern kingdom of Judah. The City of David is Jerusalem, the ancestral city of David. The succession of Jehoshaphat preserves the Davidic line, which is central to God’s covenant promises.
Application
Faithfulness to God: Asa is commended for doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord. His reign demonstrates the importance of remaining faithful to God and His commands, even in a corrupt society.
Removing Idolatry: Asa’s actions highlight the need to remove idolatry from our lives. Just as he removed idols from the land of Judah, we should identify and eliminate anything that takes the place of God in our hearts.
Passing on a Legacy: Asa’s death and Jehoshaphat’s succession remind us of the importance of passing on a godly legacy to the next generation. As parents or leaders, we have a responsibility to instill a love for God and His ways in those who come after us.
The Consequences of Sin: While Asa was faithful for most of his reign, in his later years he relied on foreign alliances instead of trusting in God, leading to rebuke from the prophet Hanani and a series of conflicts. This serves as a reminder that even the most righteous can stumble if they turn away from the Lord.
Reflection
Asa’s life encourages us to remain faithful to God, prioritise removing idols, and pass on a godly legacy. His death and burial remind us that our time on earth is limited, and the succession of his son shows the importance of preparing the next generation to follow the Lord.
