1 Kings 15:23

The rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities which he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet.

1 Kings 15:23 (KJV)

This verse closes the account of King Asa of Judah. His reign is described in 1 Kings 15:9-24. The first part of the verse is a standard summary formula used in the books of Kings. It points to “the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah,” which was an official royal record, not the biblical books of 1 and 2 Chronicles. That record is now lost, but it shows that Asa’s deeds were considered important enough to be written down.

The verse highlights two things about Asa: his strength and his weakness. “All his might” and the cities he built show that his earlier years were marked by activity and success. The second part adds a sober detail: in his old age he was diseased in his feet. The text does not explain the cause of this disease or say it was punishment for sin. It simply records it as a fact of his later life.

The parallel account in 2 Chronicles 16 gives more information. It tells us that in his later years, Asa relied on the king of Syria instead of the Lord in a conflict with Baasha (2 Chronicles 16:1-10). When his foot disease became severe, he sought help from physicians rather than from the Lord (2 Chronicles 16:12). The verse in 1 Kings does not make this connection explicit, but the fuller picture shows a spiritual decline in Asa’s final years.

This verse reminds us that a life of faithfulness and accomplishment can end with physical weakness. Even the most devoted servants of God experience decay. The contrast between Asa’s might and his later disease is a reminder of human mortality. It also encourages us to consider the whole of a person’s life, not just its end. The parallel account warns us to continue relying on God to the very end, rather than turning to other sources of help.

Asa’s life points to the need for a perfect king who would never fail. That king is found in Christ, who was faithful in all things and whose reign will never end. We can look to Him as our example and our hope, especially when our own strength fades.
