1 Kings 15:6
And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.
1 Kings 15:6 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the record of the kings of Israel and Judah. After Solomon’s death, the united kingdom split into two: the northern kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam, and the southern kingdom of Judah under Rehoboam, Solomon’s son and David’s grandson. The division came as a direct result of Solomon’s disobedience to God.
Meaning
The text states that there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life. This was not a single battle but a continual state of hostility. The phrase “all the days of his life” may refer to Rehoboam, or it may point to his son Abijam, meaning the conflict continued into the next generation. Either way, the rivalry was persistent and affected both kingdoms.
Biblical connections
This verse repeats the statement found in 1 Kings 14:30, which also records continual warfare between the two kings. Rehoboam’s war was defensive; the prophet Shemaiah had told him not to attack Israel, so he maintained a defensive stance. Yet the hostility remained. The conflict shows the lasting impact of sin and division, even as God preserved the line of David through Judah.
Application
Division and strife often persist for a lifetime and affect later generations. Believers are called to pursue peace and reconciliation, because disunity weakens the witness of the church. The cost of disobedience is real, but God remains faithful to His promises even amid turmoil.
Reflection
Consider how unresolved conflict in your own life may be affecting those around you. God values unity among His people, and He gives grace to seek peace. Let this verse encourage you to take steps toward reconciliation, trusting that God’s purposes continue even in difficult circumstances.
