Context

Ahaziah became king of Israel after his father Ahab died. The verse records God’s verdict on his reign: he did evil in the sight of the Lord. His wickedness was not original but followed the paths of his father, his mother, and Jeroboam.

Meaning

His father Ahab and mother Jezebel promoted Baal worship and persecuted God’s prophets. Jezebel was still living and served Baal and Astarte, the deities of her homeland. Jeroboam, the first king of the northern kingdom, set up golden calves in Bethel and Dan to keep Israelites from worshiping in Jerusalem. Ahaziah walked in all these ways, continuing the idolatry that had corrupted Israel.

Biblical connections

The phrase “who made Israel to sin” repeatedly describes Jeroboam’s influence (1 Kings 14:16). It shows that leading others into sin carries a heavy guilt. Ahaziah’s choice to follow these examples made him part of that same destructive legacy.
