1 Kings 3:17

And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.

1 Kings 3:17 (KJV)

This verse records the opening testimony of one woman in a legal dispute before King Solomon. Two women lived in the same house, and each had given birth to a son. One child died during the night, and now both women claim the living child as her own. The case comes to the king for judgment, and the woman speaks first, addressing Solomon as “my lord” and acknowledging his authority. Her words set the stage for a dramatic revelation of truth.

The woman’s words establish the shared living situation and the birth of her child. She states plainly that she and the other woman dwell in one house, and that she gave birth while the other woman was present. This testimony is truthful and direct, setting the stage for the rest of the account. Her plea shows that she trusts the king to hear her case and to act justly. In a culture where women had limited legal standing, she boldly presents her claim, relying on the king’s wisdom to resolve the dispute.

The full account in 1 Kings 3:16-28 shows how Solomon discerns the true mother. He proposes to divide the living child with a sword, and the real mother begs him to give the child to the other woman instead. Her selfless love reveals the truth. This story demonstrates the wisdom God gave Solomon to govern His people, as promised earlier in 1 Kings 3:9-12. The narrative also echoes the broader biblical theme that God cares for the vulnerable and ensures justice for those who seek it.

This passage teaches the value of truthful testimony and the importance of seeking justice through proper authority. The woman did not try to deceive the king; she presented her case honestly. In our own lives, we are called to speak truthfully, especially when we seek help or resolution. We can also learn from the true mother’s example of sacrificial love, which puts the child’s welfare above her own claim. Her willingness to give up her son rather than see him harmed challenges us to examine our own priorities.

God sees the truth even when human judgment is difficult. He gave Solomon wisdom to discern what was hidden, and He can guide us in our own decisions. When we face disputes or difficult choices, we can pray for wisdom and trust that God will lead us to what is right. The story reminds us that genuine love is willing to sacrifice for the good of others. It also encourages us to approach authority with honesty, knowing that God can work through human institutions to bring about justice.
