1 Kings 3:5

In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.

1 Kings 3:5 (KJV)

The book of 1 Kings recounts the reign of Solomon, the son of King David, over the united kingdom of Israel. In this passage, Solomon has just become king, and he travels to Gibeon to offer sacrifices to the Lord. Gibeon was an important city in ancient Israel, housing the tabernacle and the bronze altar. God chose this specific location to reveal Himself to Solomon, showing His desire to commune with His servant.

This verse describes a divine encounter. The Lord appears to Solomon in a dream by night. This is not a common or natural dream but an extraordinary, supernatural revelation—a prophetic night vision. In such dreams, God spoke to His prophets, and the recipient kept full use of reasoning powers, was under divine impressions, and was in a spiritual frame of mind. God’s invitation, “Ask what I shall give thee,” reveals His generosity and His desire to bless Solomon abundantly. It also shows that God wants Solomon to seek Him and to make a request that aligns with His purposes.

Dreams were a common means by which God communicated with His people in the Old Testament. This demonstrates God’s desire to have a personal relationship with Solomon and to communicate His will to him. The following verses show Solomon’s humble and wise reply. He acknowledges his own inadequacy and the monumental task of leading God’s people, expressing a desire for wisdom and discernment to govern with righteousness and justice. God is pleased with Solomon’s response, and He grants his request for wisdom, promising also riches and honour, surpassing any other king.

This passage teaches several important lessons. Firstly, it emphasises the value of seeking God’s presence and guidance in our lives. Solomon made the effort to go to Gibeon and offer sacrifices, demonstrating his commitment to worshiping God. Secondly, it highlights the importance of humility before God. Solomon recognised his own limitations and relied on God for wisdom and discernment. Finally, it showcases God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises. Solomon’s choice to seek wisdom pleased God, who then blessed him with more than he had asked for.

God’s invitation to Solomon is a reminder that He is willing to give generously and is interested in the hearts of His people. The privilege of approaching God with our requests is a gift, but it also calls for wisdom in what we ask. Like Solomon, we can come before God with humility, seeking what aligns with His will. This verse encourages us to trust that God hears our prayers and responds with faithfulness, often giving more than we could imagine. The encounter at Gibeon shows that God takes the initiative to draw near to His servants, and He still speaks to those who seek Him with sincere hearts.
