1 Kings 6:1
And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the Lord.
1 Kings 6:1 (KJV)
Context
The book of 1 Kings records the history of Solomon’s reign. This verse gives the exact time when he began to build the temple in Jerusalem. The date is tied to two important events: the exodus from Egypt and Solomon’s rule over Israel.
The four hundred and eightieth year after the exodus shows that nearly five centuries had passed since God delivered His people from slavery. This long span of time highlights the importance of the temple project. It was not a sudden decision but part of God’s plan that had been unfolding for generations.
Solomon began the work in the fourth year of his reign. His father, David, had wanted to build a house for the LORD, but God chose Solomon for this task. The temple would become the central place of worship for the nation.
Meaning
The month Zif, the second month of the Hebrew calendar, marks the start of the building in the spring season. This detail shows the careful record of events in Israel’s history. The verse calls the building “the house of the LORD,” not just a royal project. It was sacred space set apart for God’s presence among His people.
The precise dating also shows that God works through real history. He is not distant or vague. He acts at specific times and places, and He keeps His promises across many years.
Biblical connections
This verse connects to God’s promise to David that his son would build a house for the LORD’s name. The temple fulfilled that promise and became the place where Israel would meet God. The timing, nearly five centuries after the exodus, shows the continuity of God’s redemptive work from deliverance to a permanent dwelling.
Application
God’s timing is often longer than human expectation. The Israelites waited many years for a permanent place of worship. Believers today can trust that God is faithful even when His plans take time to unfold. A project begun in obedience, like the temple, can become a lasting testimony of God’s presence.
Reflection
This verse invites readers to consider what they are building for the LORD. The temple was built with care and at the right time. Each believer’s life can be a place where God’s presence dwells, built patiently and according to His purpose.
