1 Kings 7:21

And he set up the pillars in the porch of the temple: and he set up the right pillar, and called the name thereof Jachin: and he set up the left pillar, and called the name thereof Boaz.

1 Kings 7:21 (KJV)

This verse appears in the account of Solomon, son of King David, building the temple in Jerusalem. The surrounding chapter describes the temple’s design and the skill Solomon used in its construction. Here, Solomon sets up two bronze pillars at the entrance of the temple’s porch. According to 1 Kings 7:23, each pillar was twenty cubits high, about thirty feet (9.1 metres). The text does not give their circumference, but they were massive supports that dominated the entrance.

The names of the pillars carry deep meaning. Jachin means “he establishes,” while Boaz means “strength” or “in him is strength.” These names were not decorative. They declared truths about God’s character to everyone who entered. Jachin points to God’s establishing work—His faithfulness in setting up a covenant relationship and a place of worship for His people. Boaz reminds believers of God’s strength, love, compassion, and grace, offering hope and stability in hardship.

The act of naming the pillars shows intentionality in the temple’s construction. Every detail pointed to God’s promises. The pillars stood as silent witnesses to His faithfulness and power, inviting worshippers to trust Him as they entered His house. This connects to the broader truth that God establishes and strengthens His people, just as the pillars were set firmly in place.

When we reflect on this passage, Boaz becomes a reminder that God’s love and grace are ever-present, offering strength to endure life’s challenges. Jachin encourages us to trust that God will establish and uphold His promises. The temple’s construction underscores God’s continual presence among His people. It calls believers to be mindful of God’s nearness, to pray, and to honor His dwelling place in our hearts.

Through the pillars Jachin and Boaz, Scripture communicates that God is a God of establishment, stability, strength, and support. He keeps His promises, provides for His people, and desires a relationship with them. As you enter worship, remember that God’s faithfulness and strength are foundational. He alone provides the security and stability your soul needs.
