1 Kings 7:22
And upon the top of the pillars was lily work: so was the work of the pillars finished.
1 Kings 7:22 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes the account of the two bronze pillars that stood at the entrance of Solomon’s temple. The pillars were named Jachin and Boaz (1 Kings 7:21). Jachin means “He establishes,” and Boaz means “In him is strength.” These names point to God’s faithfulness and stability.
Meaning
The “lily work” refers to decorative carvings shaped like lilies on the capitals, the top parts of the pillars. This detail repeats what is said in 1 Kings 7:19, where the capitals were of lily work in the porch, four cubits. The repetition stresses the perfection of the craftsmanship. The lily, known for beauty and purity, adds a symbolic layer to the pillars, which stood as a sign of God’s presence and the temple’s glory.
The statement that the work on the pillars was finished marks the completion of this part of the temple project. It shows the careful attention given to bring the work to its proper end. The finished pillars remind us that God values precision, completion, and dedication in the tasks He entrusts to His people.
Biblical connections
The pillars were not merely structural supports; they carried deep meaning. Their names declare that God establishes His people and gives them strength. This truth connects with the broader message of the temple as a place where God dwells among His people. The lily work, with its beauty, reflects the excellence that belongs to worship.
Application
First, the pillars teach us to build our lives on the firm foundation of God’s truth and strength, trusting in His faithfulness for stability. Second, the fine craftsmanship calls us to offer our best in every area—work, relationships, and service—honoring God with excellence. Finally, the completed pillars encourage perseverance, urging us to finish well the assignments God has given us, just as the artisans completed their work with care.
Reflection
This verse gives a vivid glimpse into the temple’s construction, revealing the practical and symbolic roles of the pillars, the beauty of their lily work, and the significance of their completion. It invites us to find stability in God, pursue excellence in all we do, and faithfully bring to completion the work God has set before us.
