1 Samuel 10:12

And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

1 Samuel 10:12 (KJV)

Samuel had anointed Saul as Israel’s first king, and the Spirit of God came upon him. In the previous verses, Saul met a group of prophets and began to prophesy with them. People who knew him were amazed and asked, “Is Saul also among the prophets?“

In this verse, a man from the same place asks, “But who is their father?” This question suggests that the prophets did not come from a prophetic family or a special school. Saul, from an ordinary background, was not trained as a prophet, so his prophesying was unexpected. The people’s surprise became a lasting proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?” The proverb expressed amazement that someone so unlikely could be used by God. It also shows that God’s Spirit is not limited by human expectations or social status.

This event shows that God’s Spirit can work through anyone, regardless of human qualifications. The same truth appears in the New Testament, where the Holy Spirit empowers ordinary believers for service. God’s calling does not depend on family line, education, or social status. The question “Who is their father?” may imply that the prophets were not from a prophetic lineage, making Saul’s inclusion even more remarkable. This reminds us that God’s Spirit is not confined to traditional structures or human hierarchies.

This verse reminds us not to limit God by our expectations. He often chooses people who seem unlikely by human standards. We should not judge someone’s usefulness to God by their background or appearance. Instead, we can trust that God equips those He calls, and we should be open to His surprising work in our lives and in others. The people’s skepticism reflects their difficulty in accepting that God had chosen someone so unlikely. Yet God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His choices are not based on human merit.

God’s choices often challenge our assumptions. Saul’s experience was a sign of divine empowerment, confirming his appointment as king. Yet this initial blessing did not guarantee his faithfulness later. We are encouraged to remain humble and obedient, recognizing that God’s Spirit can transform anyone, but we must continue to follow Him faithfully. This verse calls us to trust in God’s wisdom and to celebrate His work in the lives of others, even when we do not fully understand it.
