1 Samuel 10:18

And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:

1 Samuel 10:18 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the moment when Samuel, the last judge of Israel, gathers the people at Mizpah. He has already privately anointed Saul as the first king. Now he speaks publicly to confirm that appointment. The words come as a prophetic declaration, introduced by the formula “Thus saith the Lord God of Israel.” This phrase shows that Samuel speaks not from his own authority but as God’s messenger.

God reminds Israel of two great acts. He brought them up out of Egypt, freeing them from slavery. He also delivered them from the Egyptians and from every kingdom that oppressed them. The title “Lord God of Israel” stresses His covenant relationship with His people. This is not mere history; it is a theological argument. God’s past faithfulness becomes the foundation for present trust and obedience.

The pattern of deliverance appears throughout Scripture. God hears the cries of His people, saves them by His power, and establishes a relationship with them. This same pattern points forward to the greater redemption in Christ, who delivers believers from bondage to sin. The reminder also frames the people’s request for a king. Their desire for a human ruler must be understood under God’s kingship, for He alone is the ultimate deliverer.

Believers today can recall God’s past faithfulness as a reason to trust Him now. When facing new challenges, remembering how God has already worked brings confidence. Human leaders, even good ones like Saul, remain subordinate to God’s sovereign rule. No earthly authority replaces His care.

God’s deliverance is both historical and personal. He acted for Israel, and He acts for His people today. This verse calls for gratitude and loyalty. It invites each reader to ask: Do I remember what God has done, and does that memory shape my obedience?
