1 Samuel 12:11

And the Lord sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.

1 Samuel 12:11 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel records the shift from the period of the judges to the monarchy in Israel. Samuel, the last judge and a prophet, speaks to the people at a solemn assembly. He reminds them of God’s past faithfulness as they prepare to receive a king.

Samuel lists four deliverers: Jerubbaal (another name for Gideon), Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel himself. These men were judges whom God raised up to rescue Israel from oppression. The exact identity of Bedan is uncertain; some think it refers to Barak or another judge. The key point is that the LORD sent them. Deliverance did not come from human strength or merit but from God’s sovereign choice.

The phrase “ye dwelled safe” describes the result of God’s deliverance. When Israel cried out to God and repented, He sent judges to save them, and they lived in peace. This safety was not earned; it was a gift from the Lord. The Hebrew word for “safe” carries the sense of security and rest, a peace that comes only from God’s protection.

This verse summarizes the pattern seen throughout the book of Judges: Israel sinned, suffered under enemies, cried out to God, and He raised up a deliverer. The same God who acted in the past continues to save His people. The deliverers point to a greater deliverance, for Jesus Christ is the ultimate Savior who brings lasting peace. Just as God sent judges to rescue Israel from physical enemies, He sent His Son to rescue us from sin and death.

God still raises up deliverers and provides safety for those who trust Him. Remembering His past faithfulness gives confidence for present troubles. When facing enemies or difficulties, believers can cry out to the Lord, knowing He hears and acts. The call is to rely on God alone, not on human ability. Reflect on the ways God has shown His faithfulness in your own life, and let that memory strengthen your trust in Him today.

Consider how God has delivered you in the past. His works are not random; they show a consistent pattern of care. The peace that God gives is real and lasting. Let gratitude for His deliverance lead to deeper trust and obedience.
