1 Samuel 12:16

Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the Lord will do before your eyes.

1 Samuel 12:16 (KJV)

This verse comes from Samuel’s farewell address to Israel. The people had demanded a king so they could be like the nations around them. Samuel reminded them of God’s faithfulness and their own unfaithfulness. Now he calls them to witness a sign that confirms his words and shows God’s authority over their new king. This moment marks the transition from the period of the judges to the monarchy, a time of significant change for the nation.

The command to “stand and see” is an invitation to active attention. It means more than physical posture; it calls for fixed attention of the mind. The people are to be present, alert, and engaged as God reveals His power. The “great thing” is the thunder and rain that immediately follow. This was miraculous because such weather was unusual at that time, and it came suddenly upon Samuel’s prayer. The event was a direct display of God’s sovereignty, confirming Samuel’s words and demonstrating that God rules over all creation.

This event shows that God’s acts are meant to be witnessed by the whole community, not just individuals. The sign confirmed Samuel’s role as prophet and demonstrated God’s sovereignty over Israel, even as they transitioned to human kingship. It also served as a sign of their great wrong in asking for a king, while reassuring them of God’s continued presence. Throughout Scripture, God often uses visible signs to teach His people and to call them back to trust in Him. Here, the storm was both a warning and a comfort, showing that God had not abandoned them despite their request.

Believers today are called to be attentive and receptive to God’s work. We are to observe and recognize His power, sovereignty, and faithfulness. The verse encourages us to trust in God’s plans, even when circumstances seem challenging or uncertain. We are to maintain a posture of faith, eagerly anticipating God’s intervention and actively seeking to discern His hand at work in our lives. This means pausing from our busy routines to notice what God is doing, both in our personal lives and in the world around us.

Take time to pause and be still before God. Expectantly watch for His mighty works, knowing that He is sovereign over all circumstances. His actions are worthy of reverent attention, and He invites you to see them with your own eyes. Consider how you can practice this kind of attentive waiting in your daily walk with Him.
