1 Samuel 15:11

It repenteth me that I haue set vp Saul to be king: for hee is turned backe from following me, and hath not performed my commandements. And it grieued Samuel; and he cried vnto the Lord all night. 1 Samuel 15:11 (KJV)

Context: In 1 Samuel 15, God instructs Saul, the first king of Israel, to carry out His command to utterly destroy the Amalekites and all their possessions as a judgment upon them. However, Saul disobeys God’s specific instructions and spares King Agag and the best of the Amalekite livestock.

Obedience to God is crucial: God expects His people to obey His commands without compromise. Partial obedience is still disobedience. It is essential to align our actions with God’s revealed will.

The danger of rationalisation: Saul rationalised his disobedience by sparing the best livestock, claiming he intended to offer them as sacrifices to God. However, God values obedience over religious rituals or offerings done in disobedience.

The consequences of disobedience: Saul’s disobedience had lasting repercussions. Disobedience to God can result in loss of blessings, diminished spiritual growth, and severed intimacy with God.

Application:

Seek God’s will: It is crucial to seek God’s guidance through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel. God’s will should always take precedence over our personal desires or reasoning.

Practice complete obedience: Strive to obey God fully, even in the small details. Do not rationalise or compromise God’s instructions.

Repentance and restoration: If we have disobeyed God, we must humble ourselves, confess our sins, and seek His forgiveness. God is gracious and merciful, and through repentance we can experience His restoration.
