1 Samuel 17:4
And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
1 Samuel 17:4 (KJV)
Context
1 Samuel 17 places Israel and the Philistines on opposing hills with a valley between them, poised for battle. In this setting, a single warrior steps forward from the Philistine camp. The Hebrew word translated “champion” can mean a man “between two,” one who stood between the armies to settle the conflict by single combat. Goliath of Gath, one of the five major Philistine cities, came out as that designated fighter, proposing to decide the war by a duel.
Meaning
Goliath’s height is given as six cubits and a span. Using a cubit of about eighteen inches and a span of about six inches, this makes him roughly nine feet six inches tall, which is why many modern translations render his height as over nine feet. Some ancient Greek manuscripts record his height as four cubits and a span, about six feet nine inches, but the traditional Hebrew text reads six cubits and a span. Either way, the description marks him as an imposing and formidable opponent, one whose physical presence alone could intimidate an army.
Application
Goliath represents the seemingly insurmountable challenges believers face. The passage encourages readers not to be discouraged by daunting circumstances but to place their faith in God, who is greater than any obstacle. God can equip His people with strength, wisdom, and courage to face their “giants” and achieve victory, just as He did for David.
Reflection
1 Samuel 17:4 introduces Goliath as the Philistine champion and sets the stage for the remarkable account of David’s triumph. It reminds us that no challenge is too great when we trust in God’s power and faithfulness.
