1 Samuel 17:52

And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

1 Samuel 17:52 (KJV)

This verse closes the account of David and Goliath. After David struck the giant with a stone, the Philistine army fled. The men of Israel and Judah then rose, shouted, and chased them. The battle moved from the valley of Elah to the gates of Ekron, a major Philistine city. Wounded Philistines fell along the road to Shaaraim, Gath, and Ekron.

The words “arose, and shouted” show sudden courage. Earlier, the whole Israelite army was afraid of Goliath (1 Samuel 17:11). Now they acted boldly because God had given victory through David. The pursuit to Ekron and Gath shows the completeness of the rout. The enemy was not just pushed back; they were chased to their own cities. The mention of Shaaraim, a place near the battlefield, marks the path of the wounded.

This victory was not by human strength. David had declared that the battle is the Lord’s (1 Samuel 17:47). The united action of Israel and Judah reflects the whole people sharing in God’s deliverance. The pattern of God giving victory and His people responding with bold pursuit appears elsewhere, such as when Israel crossed the Red Sea and saw the Egyptians dead on the shore (Exodus 14:30-31).

God often gives a first victory, but His people must follow through. When God opens a way, believers should not stop at the first sign of success. They should press on until the enemy is fully subdued. The unity of Israel and Judah also teaches that God’s people work best together. When one believer acts in faith, others are encouraged to join.

This verse invites each reader to trust in God’s power, not personal ability. David’s single stone became the signal for a national triumph. In daily life, one act of faith can inspire others to rise and pursue what God has begun. The call is to move forward with confidence, knowing that the Lord grants complete deliverance.
