1 Samuel 2:15

Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

1 Samuel 2:15 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who served as priests at the tabernacle in Shiloh. The surrounding passage describes their corrupt practices and the contempt they showed toward the Lord’s offerings (1 Samuel 2:12-17).

The verse reports that the priest’s servant came to the man offering a sacrifice before the fat was burned, demanding raw flesh to roast for the priest. The request for raw meat rather than boiled meat was not a minor preference; it violated the law that reserved the fat for the Lord and required it to be burned first (Leviticus 3:16). The servant’s demand was an act of exploitation, taking the best portion for the priest before God received what was due to Him.

The law of sacrifice made clear that the fat belonged to the Lord and was to be burned on the altar. By demanding meat before the fat was offered, the priests showed disregard for God’s holiness and abused their authority over the worshippers. This behavior is later described as a very great sin because they treated the Lord’s offering with contempt (1 Samuel 2:17).

Faithfulness to God takes concrete form in how worship is conducted and how authority is used. The verse warns against taking for ourselves what belongs to God, whether in worship, ministry, or daily life. It also calls readers to examine whether their practices honor God’s instructions or merely serve their own interests.

Readers should first identify exactly what is commanded and why. Application begins with reverence for God’s word, precise observation, and careful distinction between the original setting and present responsibilities. Taken within its immediate setting, 1 Samuel 2:15 has a clear place in the passage, and careful attention to its actual words provides a sound foundation for interpretation.
