1 Samuel 2:2

There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

1 Samuel 2:2 (KJV)

Hannah spoke these words in prayer after God answered her request for a son. She had been barren and had pleaded with the Lord in deep sorrow. In His faithfulness, God gave her Samuel, and she dedicated the boy to serve in the house of the Lord. Her prayer moves from personal gratitude to praise of God’s character.

“There is none holy as the LORD” declares that God alone is holy. The Hebrew word qadosh means separate, sacred, or set apart. God is completely distinct from every created being. His holiness includes absolute moral purity, perfection, and transcendence. No one else shares His essential holiness.

“For there is none beside thee” stresses God’s exclusivity. He is the one true God, unlike the idols worshiped by surrounding nations. This confession of monotheism echoes the first commandment in Exodus 20:3, where God forbids other gods before Him. Hannah affirms that the Lord alone deserves worship.

“Neither is there any rock like our God” pictures God as a firm foundation and refuge. A rock suggests strength, stability, and protection. In times of trouble, He is immovable and reliable. This image also shows that God is unchanging and consistent in His character.

The title “rock” appears throughout the Old Testament as a name for God, emphasizing His protection of His people. Hannah’s praise anticipates the New Testament revelation that this holy God is fully revealed in Jesus Christ, who is our rock and refuge. God’s holiness is essential, original, and perfect; even angels are holy only in a derived and limited way.

This verse calls us to examine our own lives and put away anything that competes with God for our devotion. We may not bow to carved idols, but we can still trust in wealth, status, or human strength. Hannah’s words remind us that only God is truly holy and worthy of our complete trust.

Because God is our rock, we can find security in Him during trials. His unchanging nature means He will never fail us. When we face uncertainty, we can rely on His strength and protection, just as Hannah did.

Hannah’s prayer turns personal joy into public praise of God’s greatness. Her example encourages us to move from our own experiences of God’s help to worship of His attributes. We can rejoice that the holy God who answered Hannah is the same God who hears us today.
