1 Samuel 2:32

And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.

1 Samuel 2:32 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a prophecy that a man of God delivered to Eli, the priest of Shiloh. Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served as priests but acted wickedly, dishonouring the Lord and His offerings. Because of their persistent sin, God declared judgment on Eli’s household.

“And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation” warns that an enemy will threaten the sanctuary where God dwells among His people. This enemy likely refers to the Philistines, who soon fought against Israel and captured the ark of God (1 Samuel 4:1). Eli himself witnessed this disaster and died when he heard the news.

“In all the wealth which God shall give Israel” shows that the attack would come during a time of prosperity and blessing. Material abundance does not protect a people from judgment when they persist in disobedience.

“And there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever” repeats the earlier judgment that Eli’s line would be cut off from the priesthood. No one in his family would reach old age, a sign of premature death and loss of honour. This was fulfilled in the deaths of Hophni and Phinehas in battle, the death of Eli, and later the massacre of priests at Nob (1 Samuel 22).

Generations later, during Solomon’s reign, the priesthood passed from Eli’s descendants to the line of Zadok (1 Kings 2:26-27). This fulfilled the prophecy that Eli’s house would no longer serve as priests forever.

This verse reminds readers that God holds His people accountable, especially those who represent Him. Faithful stewardship matters more than wealth or position. God’s presence in the tabernacle did not shield the disobedient from consequences, and neither does religious privilege protect anyone from divine discipline.

God’s judgment is just and certain, but His purposes continue through a faithful priest. Jesus Christ intercedes for His people, offering the perfect priesthood that Eli’s line lost. This passage calls believers to honour God, obey His commands, and live with integrity before Him.
