1 Samuel 20:11

And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

1 Samuel 20:11 (KJV)

This verse captures a decisive moment in the friendship between Jonathan, King Saul’s son, and David. David had won Saul’s favour through brave victories over the Philistines, but Saul grew jealous and saw David as a threat. Jonathan, however, remained loyal to David and wanted to protect him.

In 1 Samuel 20, David and Jonathan meet secretly. David fears Saul’s anger, and Jonathan promises to learn his father’s intentions. Here, Jonathan invites David to go out into the field. This was a private place, likely near Gibeah, where they could talk without being overheard by Saul’s servants. The field gave them freedom to speak openly and plan together.

Jonathan’s invitation shows his deep commitment to David. He does not simply offer words of comfort; he takes action to create a safe space for honest conversation. The field becomes a place of trust, where their true concerns could be shared without fear.

This movement from the palace to the field also shows Jonathan’s willingness to step away from his father’s authority. He chooses loyalty to David over his position as the king’s son. His actions reveal that genuine friendship requires courage and personal sacrifice.

Jonathan’s loyalty points to the kind of love Jesus later described when He said that greater love has no one than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). Jonathan risked his own safety for David, and his covenant friendship foreshadows the self-giving love that Christ shows His followers.

This verse encourages believers to be faithful friends who seek the good of others, even when it costs something. Like Jonathan, we can create spaces of honesty and safety for those we love, and we can stand by them when others turn away.

Consider the friendships God has placed in your life. Are you willing to speak truth, offer protection, and act for the well-being of others, even when it is difficult? Jonathan’s example calls us to love with courage and faithfulness.
