And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the Lord’s priests.

Context

David was fleeing from King Saul, who saw him as a rival. David stopped at Nob, where Ahimelech the priest gave him holy bread and the sword of Goliath. Doeg the Edomite, one of Saul’s servants, saw this and reported it to the king. Saul then ordered the killing of the priests at Nob, and Doeg carried out the slaughter.

Meaning

Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, escaped the massacre and came to David with the terrible news. His words show that Saul had turned against the Lord’s own servants. The priests had helped David in good faith, yet they suffered greatly. This verse records a moment of deep sorrow and shock, as the priestly line at Nob was nearly wiped out. Abiathar was the sole survivor, and his report brought the full weight of the tragedy to David.
