1 Samuel 23:3
And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
1 Samuel 23:3 (KJV)
Context
David is anointed as Israel’s future king, but he is now a fugitive. King Saul pursues him out of jealousy, so David and his men hide in the wilderness of Judah. They learn that the Philistines are attacking the city of Keilah. David asks the Lord whether he should go and fight them. His men answer with fear: if they are afraid even in Judah, where they have some safety, how much more will they fear at Keilah, which lies near Philistine territory.
Meaning
The men’s question shows honest fear among faithful followers. They do not refuse to obey; they express their dread openly. Their words reveal a real danger: Keilah is more exposed than their current hiding place. The verse highlights the human struggle between trust and fear. David does not dismiss their concern. Instead, he takes their fear seriously and seeks the Lord again for direction.
Biblical connections
David’s pattern of inquiring of the Lord appears throughout his life. In 1 Samuel 23:2 he asks whether to fight, and in 1 Samuel 23:4 he asks again after hearing his men’s fear. This repeated seeking shows that God welcomes our honest questions and gives clear guidance. The narrative also connects to David’s shepherd heart: he is willing to risk his life for the people of Keilah, just as a shepherd protects the flock.
Application
Believers can bring their fears to God without shame. Fear is a natural response to danger, but it should not control our decisions. Like David, we can acknowledge the risk, ask for wisdom, and then obey what God directs. God’s guidance may lead us into difficult places, but He promises to be with us and to give strength for the task.
Reflection
When you face a daunting step, do you hide your fear or bring it to God? David’s men spoke honestly, and David responded by seeking the Lord again. This verse invites you to trust that God sees the danger, understands your fear, and will guide you faithfully through it.
