1 Samuel 23:6
And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.
1 Samuel 23:6 (KJV)
Context
1 Samuel records Israel’s shift from the time of the judges to the monarchy. Saul is the first king, but God has chosen David to succeed him. Saul pursues David out of jealousy, and David flees for his life. In this verse, David is at Keilah, a city he has just rescued from Philistine attack. Abiathar, a priest, escapes the slaughter of the priests at Nob and comes to David, bringing the ephod with him.
Meaning
Abiathar is the son of Ahimelech, the high priest at Nob. Saul ordered the killing of the priests because they helped David. Abiathar alone escaped. The ephod was a sacred linen garment worn by the high priest. It held the Urim and Thummim, objects used to discern God’s will. By bringing the ephod, Abiathar gave David a way to ask God for direction. This was not merely a symbol; it was a practical tool for seeking divine guidance.
Biblical connections
In the following verses, David uses the ephod to ask God whether he should stay in Keilah and whether the men of the city will surrender him to Saul. God answers clearly, and David leaves. This shows that the ephod was not just a garment but a means of receiving God’s counsel. The event also fulfills God’s promise to preserve a faithful priest for David, even as Saul tries to cut off all support.
Application
God often provides the means to know His will in the middle of danger. David did not have to guess; he had a priest and the ephod. Believers today have the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures, which are reliable guides. When facing hard decisions, it is wise to use the resources God has given, rather than relying only on human reasoning. Abiathar’s loyalty also reminds us to stand with God’s anointed, even when it is risky.
Reflection
This verse shows that God’s guidance is not limited by earthly power. Saul controlled the throne, but he could not stop God from providing a priest and an ephod for David. God’s provision often comes through faithful people who bring the means of seeking Him. The ephod points to the importance of prayer and dependence on divine wisdom. In every trial, God can supply what is needed to follow Him faithfully.
