1 Samuel 26:15

And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.

1 Samuel 26:15 (KJV)

First Samuel 26 records David’s second opportunity to kill King Saul, who pursued him out of jealousy and fear. David and Abishai entered Saul’s camp at night while the king and his soldiers slept. David took Saul’s spear and water jug but refused to harm him. In this verse, David calls out to Abner, the commander of Saul’s army, who was responsible for guarding the king.

David acknowledges Abner’s reputation as a valiant man, a term for a man of great courage and high rank. The question “who is like to thee in Israel?” highlights Abner’s standing as second only to Saul. Yet this man of honor failed in his duty. David’s rebuke is sharp: because Abner did not keep watch, an intruder came close enough to destroy the king. The irony is clear—the one trusted with the king’s safety was negligent.

David’s restraint contrasts with Abner’s failure. Though anointed as future king, David respected Saul as “the lord the king” and would not harm the Lord’s anointed. He left judgment to God, trusting in God’s timing rather than taking matters into his own hands. This echoes David’s earlier refusal to kill Saul in 1 Samuel 24.

This passage calls believers to examine their vigilance in God-given responsibilities. Those entrusted with the care and protection of others must remain watchful. It also teaches humility and honor toward authority, even when that authority is flawed. David’s example encourages trust in God’s sovereignty rather than forcing outcomes through human means.

David’s question to Abner exposes the gap between reputation and faithfulness. A good name means little if duty is neglected. Believers are reminded that God sees both public honor and private diligence. True valour is shown not only in battle but in faithful watch over what God has entrusted to each person.
