1 Samuel 3:8
And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.
1 Samuel 3:8 (KJV)
Context
Samuel served in the tabernacle under Eli the priest, yet he did not yet know the Lord personally (1 Samuel 3:7). The Lord called him three times, and each time Samuel ran to Eli, thinking the old priest had called. This third call is a turning point: Eli finally understands that God is speaking to the boy.
Meaning
The repetition of the call shows God’s patient persistence. He does not give up after one or two attempts. Samuel’s response, “Here am I,” reveals his readiness and humility, even though he does not recognize the voice. Eli’s perception is a moment of spiritual discernment; he realizes that the Lord has chosen to speak to the child. This verse highlights that God often calls in ways that may be unrecognized at first. Spiritual discernment can come through godly counsel and repeated divine initiative. The third call also marks a shift: what seemed like a human mistake becomes a divine encounter. Samuel’s repeated running to Eli shows his teachable spirit, and Eli’s eventual insight shows that discernment may grow slowly but surely. God’s persistent pursuit of Samuel emphasizes His desire to communicate with him, and this same patience extends to believers today.
Biblical connections
This event prepares Samuel for his role as a prophet who will receive and deliver God’s word to Israel (1 Samuel 3:20-21). It also echoes the way God calls other servants, such as Moses at the burning bush, with patient and direct initiative.
Application
Believers today can learn from Samuel’s example. God may speak through Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, or circumstances. Like Samuel, we should respond quickly and humbly, even when we do not fully understand. Eli’s role reminds us of the value of godly mentors who help us recognize God’s voice.
Stay attentive to God’s promptings, even when they come unexpectedly.
Seek guidance from mature believers when you are unsure.
Develop spiritual discernment through regular study of God’s Word and prayer.
Reflection
Consider how God may be calling you. Are you listening with humility and readiness? Do you have an Eli in your life to help you discern His voice? Ask the Lord to give you a sensitive heart and a willing spirit to answer, “Here am I.“
