1 Samuel 31:5

And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.

1 Samuel 31:5 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel traces the rise and fall of King Saul, Israel’s first king. In chapter 31, the Philistines launch a decisive attack, and Saul and his sons face a desperate situation on Mount Gilboa. Saul’s reign had been marked by disobedience and failure to follow God’s instructions, leading to his downfall. Critically wounded by archers and fearing capture and abuse, Saul asked his armourbearer to kill him, but the armourbearer refused out of fear. Saul then took his own life by falling on his sword. When the armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he followed suit and died with him.

This verse records the tragic death of King Saul and his armourbearer. The armourbearer’s suicide is not commanded or condoned by God; it is a tragic outcome of the circumstances. The narrative does not glorify suicide but presents it as a historical reality, urging readers to consider the weight of their choices and the importance of trusting God even in dire circumstances. Saul’s demise serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience. Throughout his reign, Saul repeatedly failed to obey God’s commands. He offered sacrifices when he was not authorized to do so, spared King Agag when instructed to utterly destroy the Amalekites, and consulted with a medium, among other transgressions. These actions revealed Saul’s lack of trust and submission to God’s will.

The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 10:5 confirms the same event, emphasizing its historical significance. The death of Saul and his sons, including Jonathan, marked the end of Saul’s line. This had significant implications for the future of Israel’s monarchy. God had already rejected Saul as king and had chosen David to be his successor. The events surrounding Saul’s death set the stage for David to assume the throne and fulfill God’s plan for Israel.

Saul’s downfall emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commands. It is a reminder that our actions have consequences and that God desires our complete submission and trust. Rather than relying on his own understanding and desires, Saul should have sought God’s guidance in every decision. As believers, we should strive to seek God’s will through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel. Despite Saul’s failures, God’s grace and sovereignty remained. God used Saul’s tragic end to bring about His plans and purposes. Even in our own failures, we can trust in God’s grace and His ability to work all things together for good. We should strive to be obedient to God’s Word, repenting of our sins and turning to Him in all aspects of our lives. Let us seek His guidance and trust in His plan, even when we face difficult circumstances.

May we learn from Saul’s mistakes and grow in our relationship with God, relying on His grace and surrendering our lives to His will. The armourbearer’s loyalty, though commendable, led to a tragic end because it was bound to a king who had turned from God. Our loyalty must ultimately be to God, who alone gives life and hope. In moments of despair, we are called to trust in God’s deliverance rather than take matters into our own hands.
